Etsy tags generator with real buyer demand behind every suggestion
Most tag generators read your own title and hand you the words back. That is circular: if you did not know buyers search “initial necklaces”, re-reading your listing will never surface it.
This one is built from a dictionary of 457 buyer search phrases measured across 1,128 live listings. Every tag it suggests has been seen on real products that real buyers clicked.

What buyers are actually searching for
The demand score is how strongly the phrase showed up in live search results; the listing count is how many distinct products carried it. These are the phrases worth putting in your tag slots.

How Etsy actually uses your 13 tag slots
Etsy gives every listing thirteen tag slots, and most sellers fill four or five. That is not because five is enough - it is because filling the rest means guessing, and a wrong guess can cost you. Each tag is read independently, so the thirteenth slot is worth exactly as much as the first one as long as it is accurate.
In practice, five good tags and eight empty slots means you can only be found through five searches. Thirteen accurate tags means thirteen. A seller of linen wedding napkins can hold “linen napkin”, “napkins for wedding”, “linen table napkins”, “wedding table decor” and “rustic wedding napkins” at once, and each phrase reaches a buyer who searches a slightly different thing.
The second reason sellers leave slots empty is that Etsy truncates anything over 20 characters, so a long phrase simply disappears without an error. We check every suggestion against that limit before it reaches you, and the generator will shorten a phrase rather than let it vanish.
What makes a tag useful and what makes it a wasted slot
A useful tag names something a buyer would type. “linen napkin” works because a buyer who wants a linen napkin types exactly that. A tag like “handmade home decor” does not, because nobody buys a generic category - they buy the specific thing in it.
The second test is whether the tag could belong to another product. If a tag would be equally valid on a completely different listing, it adds no information about yours, and it competes with the tags that do. This is why the generator refuses to suggest a phrase your product does not actually describe. A mismatched tag is not a neutral mistake - Etsy can flag the listing for it, and a flagged listing can lose ranking on everything else as well.
The third test is redundancy. “silver necklace” and “necklace silver” are the same phrase to a buyer, so the second one spends a slot for nothing. Spreading the same intent across several slots is the most common mistake we see in listings that already have five tags.
How to read the demand score
The score is a relative ranking, not a search count. A phrase at 96 means it appeared far more often across the measured live listings than one at 60, in the same category at the same time. It is designed for one decision: when you have more good candidate tags than slots, keep the higher-scoring ones.
Two caveats are worth stating plainly. First, these are marketplace search results, not Etsy search volumes - the buyers and the products overlap heavily, so the phrases transfer well, but the number is not a monthly search count and should not be quoted as one. Second, demand is a snapshot. A phrase that was hot last season is still a good tag, but it will not be a fast-moving one.
If you want a phrase that has not been measured, the tags generator will still suggest relevant candidates - they simply arrive without a score attached, so you can judge them yourself.
Why the 20-character limit matters
Etsy ignores any tag longer than 20 characters. A phrase like “personalized initial pendant necklace for women” is a good search term and a wasted slot at the same time. Every phrase this tool hands you is checked against that limit before it is suggested, so nothing gets silently dropped by Etsy.
The generator also refuses to recommend a phrase your product does not describe. Tags that do not match the listing get flagged by Etsy, and a flagged listing can lose ranking on everything else too.
How the demand score was measured
The dictionary was harvested from live marketplace search results. For each search phrase we counted how many distinct listings used it and how many distinct products carried it, then combined both into a demand score between 0 and 100.
One honest caveat: these are marketplace search results, not Etsy search volumes. The phrases transfer well because the buyers and the products overlap, but the score is a relative ranking inside the measured set, not a monthly search count.
Tags generator questions
Is this Etsy tags generator really free?
Yes. The free tier rewrites a complete listing - a new title, all 13 tags, a description and an SEO score - once a day, with no card and no account. Pro removes the daily cap if you publish more than one listing a day.
Do I need all 13 tags, or is 5 enough?
Use all 13 when the phrases genuinely match your product. Each tag is a separate way for a buyer to find you. Leave a slot empty only when you would have to repeat a phrase you already used, because a duplicate costs you a slot without adding reach.
Will the tags work for a shop outside jewelry, gifts and home?
The measured dictionary covers the three categories with the most listing volume. Outside them the generator falls back to relevance-based suggestions drawn from your own listing, which are useful but do not carry a demand score - treat those as starting points and verify them against your own search bar.
Does this tool connect to my Etsy shop or change my listings?
No. It works on the text you paste in, and it never asks for your Etsy login. You copy the tags across into the Etsy seller backend yourself, which keeps your account credentials out of any third-party tool entirely.
How often should I update my tags?
Tags are a listing attribute, not a ranking boost you can refresh weekly. Review them when you change the product, when the season turns, or when a phrase you ranked for stops producing impressions. Changing them constantly does not help, and it makes your listing history harder to read.
