Etsy description template: five formats you can paste straight in
The description is the weakest SEO field and the strongest conversion field. Etsy indexes it, but a buyer reads it only after they have clicked — which means it has one job: answer the questions that stop someone from buying.
What a description is actually for
Three things, in this order: reduce uncertainty, pre-empt the objection, and reuse your keywords naturally. Buyers who reach your description have already liked the photo. They are now looking for the reason to hesitate — size, care instructions, delivery time, whether it suits them.
That is why the classic "here is a lovely paragraph about how much I love making things" is a waste of the field. It answers no question. Here is a template that answers all of them.
Template 1: the universal fill-in-the-blank
Works for almost any physical product. Copy the whole block, replace the bracket text, delete anything that does not apply.

Weak vs. strong: the same product, two descriptions
Weak
"This beautiful mug is made with love in my studio. It would make an amazing gift for anyone special in your life. Each one is unique and carefully crafted. Please allow 3-5 days for production and shipping. Thank you for supporting small business!"
What is missing: what the mug actually is, its size, its material, whether it is dishwasher safe, what personalisation looks like, and when it will arrive. Every question a buyer has is unanswered, so the listing sits in the cart forever.
Strong
"Custom Name Mug for Her — a personalised stoneware coffee cup with a hand-painted name, made to order and fired in my home studio.
__DETAILS__
- 350ml / 12oz, 9cm tall
- Wheel-thrown stoneware, matte glaze, food-safe
- Colours: cream, sage, blush, charcoal
- Personalisation: up to 12 characters, painted by hand before firing
Dishwasher and microwave safe. Due to the hand-painted finish, each mug varies slightly — that is the point.
__ORDERING__
Add your name in the personalisation box at checkout. I will message you a proof photo before firing. Made to order — allow 5–7 business days, then 2–3 days in transit.
__A NOTE__
Every name is painted freehand, so I never rush a letter.
"Why it works: every objection is answered before it forms, the primary keyword appears naturally in the first line, and the personalisation process is explained so the buyer knows exactly what to type.
The description checklist
- ✓Does the first line contain the primary keyword and one benefit?
- ✓Are size, material and colour all stated?
- ✓Does it explain exactly what personalisation looks like?
- ✓Are processing time and delivery window both there?
- ✓Does it answer the most common question in your DMs?
- ✓Are 2–3 of your tags repeated naturally?
- ✓Is there a clear CTA — "message me your name", "add to cart"?
