Etsy tags guide: choosing all 13 tags on purpose
Etsy gives you 13 tags per listing. Most sellers fill them in reverse order and wonder why two listings for the same product never compete. This guide is about allocating those 13 slots like budget, not like a checklist.
What the 13 tags actually do
Tags are how Etsy finds listings that the buyer's query did not literally match. A tag is not a caption and it is not an ad keyword — it is a routing instruction. The algorithm weighs title, tags and description together, but a term that appears in one of those fields is a much weaker signal than a term that appears consistently across all three.
Etsy's own search-visibility guidance is public and searchable through Google — see the links at the bottom of this page rather than relying on a paraphrase.
The 13-slot allocation
Do not shuffle your 13 tags around randomly. Give each slot a job. The split below is what we use internally when reviewing a listing, and it maps cleanly onto how buyers actually search.
| Slots | Tag type | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Exact product phrase | gold initial necklace | Your highest-volume, lowest-competition core term. |
| 3–4 | Broad product + material | name necklace, gold chain | Catches buyers who search a step more generally. |
| 5–7 | Style and aesthetic | minimalist, dainty, layered | Style tags convert browsing searches into clicks. |
| 8–10 | Recipient and occasion | gift for her, graduation gift | The highest-converting long-tail cluster you will ever own. |
| 11–13 | Attribute and use case | adjustable, water resistant, everyday wear | Filter-matching attributes; low competition, steady traffic. |
Single words vs. phrases: which should win?
Multi-word phrases are tighter and rank faster, but you get fewer of them into 13 slots. The practical compromise is a mix: lead with two or three phrases, then use the remaining slots for single words that cover different intents.
| Tag shape | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 3–4 words | Head terms you must own | Very competitive; slow to break in. |
| 2–3 words | The workhorses of most shops | Balanced reach and competition — start here. |
| 1 word | Style, colour, feeling, audience | Broad, cheap to win, converts via browsing. |
| Too long (6+ words) | Nothing | Buyers never type six words. Wastes a slot. |
De-duplication rules
Etsy spends a slot on any tag that repeats a word already present in the same field. That is why "gold gold necklace" wastes a slot and why a long title can silently cannibalise your tags. The rules below keep all 13 slots productive.
- ✓No tag repeats a word from another tag — "gold necklace" plus "gold bracelet" wastes two slots on one word.
- ✓No tag duplicates a word already in your title — put it in one place or the other, not both.
- ✓No tag is a single word that also appears inside a phrase tag — "necklace" is dead once "initial name necklace" is in the list.
- ✓No brand names of other shops — you lose relevance and risk a takedown.
- ✓No punctuation, no hashtags, no "best" / "cheap" — Etsy strips them and you gain nothing.
A worked example: 13 tags for one listing
Product: a handmade ceramic mug with a custom name. Note how each slot has a distinct job and no word repeats.
| # | Tag | Slot job | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | custom name mug | Core product phrase | |
| 2 | personalized coffee cup | Synonym phrase | |
| 3 | ceramic mug | Material + product | |
| 4 | latte glass | Alternate form | |
| 5 | handmade | Craft signal | |
| 6 | cottagecore | cottagecore | Aesthetic |
| 7 | minimalist | Aesthetic | |
| 8 | gift for her | Recipient | |
| 9 | teacher gift | Recipient | |
| 10 | birthday present | Occasion | |
| 11 | dishwasher safe | Attribute | |
| 12 | office gift | Use case | |
| 13 | novelty | Category |
Multi-shop tag strategy
If you run more than one shop, the naive move — copy your best tags into every shop — is the fastest way to make all of them look like duplicates. Etsy rewards differentiated catalogues and penalises near-identical listings competing with each other.
| Rule | What to do |
|---|---|
| Own a core set | Reserve 4 tags that are core to the shop's actual product line and appear on every relevant listing. |
| Rotate the rest | The other 9 slots should differ between shops that sell overlapping products. |
| Match the catalogue | Never put a tag on a listing that the product does not genuinely match. Relevance beats density. |
| Never tag across shops | Do not use one shop's brand keyword in another shop's tags. It splits your own authority. |
| Review quarterly | Re-pick the 5 lowest-performing tags every 3 months. Tag performance decays. |
The 13-tag checklist
- ✓All 13 slots filled with distinct tags?
- ✓No word appears in two different tags?
- ✓No tag repeats a word already used in the title?
- ✓At least 2 phrases, at least 2 occasion/recipient tags?
- ✓Every tag describes the actual physical product?
- ✓Tags are 1–4 words each, lowercase, no punctuation?
- ✓Description repeats 2–3 of the same terms naturally?
